Chapter 9 - The Rehearsal

By five-thirty, Grant had returned from the office. He was glowing with an almost radioactive confidence. He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit that fit him perfectly, pacing the living room as he waited for his boss.

He went to the wine fridge and pulled out a three-thousand-dollar bottle of Bordeaux—a bottle bought entirely with funds siphoned from my inheritance, though he claimed it was a reward from a successful quarter. He uncorked it, letting it breathe, and began rehearsing his talking points out loud. He practiced stories about how "his" department had single-handedly saved the company's European accounts, practicing his humble laughs and sharp analytical observations.

Then, he turned his attention to me. He inspected my face, nodding approvingly at the heavy makeup masking his violence. “Good,” he said. “You look presentable. Remember the rules tonight. Do not speak unless spoken to. When Mr. Cross asks about our marriage, you tell him I rescued you from a miserable, aimless life.”

I placed the final salad plates on the table, keeping my voice utterly devoid of emotion. “And if he asks about the swelling under the makeup? If he asks about my face?”

Grant stepped close, grabbing my chin roughly. “Say you fell down the stairs.”

“You’ve used that explanation before,” I whispered.

He released my chin with a smirk. “Because it works. Now go check the soup.”
