Chapter 31 - The Boardroom

The boardroom at Mercer Dynamics was a sprawling expanse of polished mahogany and glass, offering a panoramic, intimidating view of the city skyline. The twelve members of the board sat around the massive table, their expressions grave and expectant. Marcus Vance sat at the head of the table opposite Julian, looking relaxed, confident, and almost bored.

As I entered, the room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Vance offered a condescending, pitying sigh, as if he were preparing to discipline a wayward child.

"Let's make this quick," he announced to the board, not even bothering to look at me. "The evidence of the Ethics Director's financial misconduct is clear and overwhelming. I motion for her immediate termination and the formal involvement of federal authorities."

I walked calmly to the front of the room, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. I didn't acknowledge his insult; I simply plugged my laptop into the primary projection system.

"I agree completely, Marcus," I said, my voice smooth and resonant. "The authorities should absolutely be involved in today's proceedings."
