Chapter 18 - The Recording

I didn't argue with him. I reached into the pocket of my apron, pulled out the digital recorder I had retrieved from the attic, and pressed play.
Grant’s own voice filled the stunned dining room, crisp and undeniable.
Cover those bruises and smile. If you ruin this promotion, you’ll regret it.
Then, the audio shifted to the recording from the night before. The sound of the slap was sickeningly loud, followed by the heavy rattle of the cabinet, my stifled cry of pain, and Grant’s venomous whisper: Nobody will believe you.
Grant lunged forward, trying to grab the recorder, but Marcus easily blocked him. The police officers immediately moved in, grabbing Grant’s arms and forcing them roughly behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoing in the room was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

"You can’t arrest me over a marital argument!" Grant shouted, thrashing against the officers as they locked him in.
Detective Alvarez stepped right into his line of sight. "Grant Mercer, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault, witness intimidation, and grand theft connected to your wife's inheritance. And based on what Mercer Dynamics has shared with us, federal corporate fraud charges will be filed by the end of the week."
