Chapter 19 - The Reckoning

As the officers began to march Grant toward the door, Celia Monroe slid one final document across the dining table. "Your employment at Mercer Dynamics is terminated effectively immediately for cause," she stated coldly. "Your company accounts, digital devices, stock options, and building access are permanently frozen."

Grant’s face collapsed into sheer terror. He looked back at me, tears streaming down his face. "Mara, please! Tell them this is a mistake! I love you!"

For years, those exact words, paired with his tears, would have terrified me into submission. That night, they just sounded pathetic and incredibly small.

"You said forgetting salt proved I was worthless," I replied, staring him down. "But it only proved how little power you actually had. You needed fear to feel important. Now you have nothing."

As they led him down the driveway, his mother arrived, pulling up in her Mercedes. She screamed, demanding to know what I had done to her perfect son. Celia stepped outside and calmly presented Diane Mercer with the shell-company records and signed transfers. Diane stopped shouting immediately when Detective Alvarez informed her she was also under federal investigation for money laundering.

Julian stepped up beside me on the porch, wrapping a warm, protective arm around my shoulders. "You’re coming home with me," he said.

I watched the police cruiser pull away into the night. I shook my head, a real smile finally breaking through. "Not home, Julian. Somewhere new."
