Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Control

Grant Mercer had spent three meticulous years teaching me that silence was my only safety. The abuse had not started with physical violence; it had crept into my life like a slow-acting poison. It began under the guise of deep, passionate love. He wanted to spend every waking moment with me, which quickly morphed into him needing to know where I was every second of the day.

Slowly, the perimeter of my world shrank. He began choosing my clothes, subtly discarding the outfits he deemed "too revealing" or "unprofessional" for the wife of a rising corporate star. Then came the monitoring of my calls. He installed a family tracker on my phone, demanding screenshots of my text messages if I took too long to reply.

When the physical violence finally began, he used it to isolate me entirely. He would tell our friends that I was fragile, prone to sudden migraines or severe anxiety attacks, whenever the bruises on my face or arms kept me locked inside the house. He orchestrated my resignation from my job, convincing me that the stress was bad for my health and that he could easily provide for us both. I was cut off from my friends, removed from my career, and systematically alienated from my own identity. Every apology he offered was accompanied by a lavish bouquet of flowers; every promise to change was followed by a new deadbolt on our front door.
