Chapter 35 - The Authorities

The boardroom doors swung open with a heavy thud. Two federal agents, whom I had briefed earlier that morning, walked in flanked by Mercer Dynamics corporate security.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

Vance didn't answer. He slumped into his chair, looking at Julian, silently pleading for the protection his mentorship had once guaranteed. Julian simply turned his chair away, staring out the window at the river, refusing to even acknowledge the man's existence.

The agents approached Vance, asking him to stand. For a man who had built his life on power, influence, and intimidation, he looked remarkably small, almost fragile, as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
