Chapter 13 - The Phantom Company

Marcus Hill, the head of security, hadn't said a word since he entered the house. Now, he reached into his jacket pocket and placed a sleek tablet on the table, sliding it toward Grant. The screen was illuminated with a complex web of financial flowcharts.
"The falsified invoices weren't just to boost your numbers for a promotion," Marcus said, his deep voice vibrating in the quiet room. "The overages were being funneled outward. The tablet shows twenty-four separate wire transfers from Mercer Dynamics directly to an offshore consulting firm called Apex Global."
Grant’s hands began to tremble. "Apex is a legitimate logistical consulting firm. We use them for supply chain optimization."

"Apex Global has no employees, no physical office, and no corporate clients other than Mercer Dynamics," Celia replied, sliding another document across the table. "What it does have is a single registered owner: your mother, Diane Mercer. Over the past eighteen months, that shell company received eight hundred and forty thousand dollars of Mercer Dynamics' funds."
Grant looked like he had been struck by lightning. He was staring at the undeniable proof of his felony embezzlement laid bare on his own dining table. "How... how did you find this?" he whispered, genuine panic finally breaking through his arrogant exterior. "Those accounts were buried. They were completely insulated."
