Chapter 3 - The Golden Facade

To everyone at Mercer Dynamics, Grant was nothing short of a corporate savior. He was the brilliant regional director, the man with perpetually polished Italian leather shoes, a razor-sharp intellect, and a flawless, disarming smile. He commanded respect in the boardroom and charmed clients at evening galas.

I often watched him at company events from the periphery, marveling at how seamlessly he slipped into the character of the benevolent leader. He would place a warm, possessive hand on the small of my back, introduce me to his colleagues as his "better half," and speak passionately about workplace ethics and integrity. The contrast was dizzying and nauseating.

At home, the mask came off the moment the front door clicked shut. His corporate charisma dissolved into a terrifying, cold tyranny. He measured his power not by quarterly profits or stock options, but by how quickly I flinched when he raised his hand, and by how quietly I cried in the bathroom afterward. He thrived on the duality of his life. He believed he was an untouchable god, capable of flawlessly managing a high-stakes corporate division while keeping a perfectly broken wife hidden away in his immaculate suburban fortress. He thought he had completely extinguished my fire. He was wrong.
