Chapter 33 - The Subpoena

The collapse of the Cabrales Group did not end with their bankruptcy.

When Villanueva Capital’s forensic auditors tore through the seized assets, they discovered a labyrinth of illegal tax evasion and offshore shell companies established directly by Bernardo and Élida.

Three weeks after Valentina’s massive corporate victory, federal agents knocked on the door of the shabby apartment where the Cabrales family was hiding.

Élida opened the door, wearing a stained bathrobe.

"Bernardo and Élida Cabrales, you are hereby served with a federal subpoena for systemic tax fraud and financial embezzlement,"

The lead agent announced, pushing past her into the tiny living room.

Bernardo collapsed onto the cheap sofa, burying his face in his hands.

"We have no money to pay the fines,"

Bernardo whispered, his voice cracking with absolute terror.

"Then you will likely face significant federal prison time,"

The agent replied coldly, handing him the thick stack of legal documents.

Élida let out a blood-curdling scream, dropping to her knees on the linoleum floor. The illusion of her superiority was completely, irreversibly destroyed. She was going to face the very justice system she had mocked her entire life.
