Chapter 21 - The Morning After

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Valentina’s modest apartment, casting a warm, golden glow across the wooden floorboards.
For the first time in over three years, Valentina woke up to the sound of absolute, uninterrupted silence. There were no frantic text messages from Rodrigo complaining about his mother’s demands. There were no passive-aggressive voicemails from Élida critiquing her choice of floral arrangements or dinner venues.
Valentina stretched her arms above her head, taking a deep, cleansing breath of the crisp morning air.
She walked into her small kitchen and turned on the coffee machine. As the rich aroma of roasted beans filled the air, she looked at her reflection in the microwave door. Her eyes, which had been heavy with exhaustion and hidden sorrow for months, looked remarkably bright.
"I am free,"
Valentina whispered to the empty room.
She poured her coffee and stepped out onto her small balcony. The city was waking up, cars humming in the distance, people rushing to their jobs. She was no longer tied to a sinking ship. She had survived the catastrophic implosion of her wedding, and instead of feeling broken, she felt an incredible, surging sense of empowerment.
Her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was a message from her father, Augusto Villanueva.

"Lunch today. My office. We have things to discuss."
Valentina smiled, taking a slow sip of her coffee. The storm was over, and it was time to rebuild.
