Chapter 15 - Delusions in the Ballroom

Back inside the opulent event hall, the situation had devolved into a state of chaotic whispering. Rodrigo was slumped in a gilded chair at the far end of the room, speaking in hushed, panicked tones to his mother.

"Mom, what did you just do?" he hissed, running a trembling hand through his hair.

"I did exactly what had to be done," Élida replied smoothly, crossing her arms over her expensive gown, her face devoid of any remorse. "That girl was never good enough for you, Rodrigo. She was common. Now you are free to choose someone of your own caliber."

"My caliber? Mom, you humiliated her in front of everyone!"

"I solved a problem," she stated coldly.

"It doesn't matter, she was the woman who was going to be my wife!" Rodrigo pleaded, a muscle feathering in his jaw.

Élida looked at him with a freezing, authoritative gaze that instantly paralyzed him.

"She was. Now she isn't. And the world is not ending."
