Chapter 12 - Calling the Titan

The phone rang twice before the line clicked open.
"Dad," Valentina said.
With that single syllable, a minuscule waver entered her voice, just a slight crack in her composure. It was more than enough for Augusto Villanueva on the other end of the line to instantly understand the gravity of the situation.
"Valentina," Augusto said, his voice deep and instantly alert. "What happened?"

"The wedding is off," she said, her breathing shallow but controlled. "Élida threw a glass of wine on me at the altar. She ordered security to throw me out. I walked out alone."
She spoke in quick, clipped sentences, maintaining a professional distance from her own heartbreak. On the other side of the phone, there was silence. It was a heavy, terrifying silence that radiated through the cellular signal. It was the silence of a sleeping dragon opening its eyes. Valentina waited, listening to the faint, rhythmic sound of her father breathing, knowing he was calculating his next move.
