Chapter 33 - The Digital Fortress

With the women safely secured in the Vermont compound, I returned to the empty Phoenix House. The sprawling halls felt eerie and silent. My father had reinforced the perimeter with thirty of his most elite, combat-hardened tactical contractors. We were turning the shelter into an impregnable fortress.
But physical walls wouldn't stop a ghost like Julian Cross. We needed to hit him where it hurt: his digital infrastructure.
Vivian Thorne arrived at the shelter accompanied by a young man wearing a hoodie and thick glasses. His name was David, and he was arguably the most brilliant, entirely unethical, white-hat hacker on the eastern seaboard. He owed Vivian a massive favor for keeping him out of federal prison three years ago.
"David is going to build our counter-strike," Vivian announced, dropping a heavy server rig onto my desk.
"Julian operates entirely in the shadows," I explained to David, pulling up the routing numbers Julian had left on my father’s desk. "He wants us to wire fifty million dollars to these specific offshore accounts. I want you to trace these accounts and find his central operational hub."
David cracked his knuckles, a manic grin spreading across his face. "These aren't standard bank accounts. They are dynamic crypto-wallets bouncing through decentralized servers in Eastern Europe. If you just try to hack them, they auto-delete."
"So how do we catch him?" my father asked, crossing his arms.
"We give him exactly what he wants, but we poison it," David explained, his fingers flying across his keyboard with blistering speed. "I will authorize a real, verifiable micro-transfer of one million dollars to his account. But I am going to embed a highly aggressive, self-replicating Trojan virus into the transaction’s metadata. The absolute second his server opens its firewall to accept the money, my virus will flood his network, bypass his encryption, and grant me total, unmitigated access to Obsidian’s global financial ledger."

"You're going to steal their entire playbook," I realized, the brilliance of the strategy washing over me.
"I'm not just going to steal it," David smirked. "I'm going to expose the identity of every single corrupt politician, judge, and oligarch tied to their syndicate directly to the FBI. But I need time. I need him distracted."
