Chapter 19 - The Trial Commences

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. The air was thick with tension as the bailiff called the room to order.
I sat at the prosecution's table, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit. I felt a cold, calculating calm wash over me. Across the aisle, Marcus sat hunched over his defense table, looking gaunt and terrified. He couldn't even bring himself to look in my direction.
The District Attorney delivered a blistering opening statement, painting a horrifying, undeniable picture of a sociopathic manipulator who used a carefully crafted public persona to mask his monstrous abuse and insatiable greed.
Then, the prosecution began presenting the evidence.
For three days, the jury was subjected to the absolute horrors of my life with Marcus. They watched the high-definition security footage of him violently shoving me against walls. They listened to Sarah, his former assistant, tearfully testify about his explosive, violent rage and the deliberate, premeditated nature of his financial fraud.
The jury’s reaction was visceral. Several jurors openly gasped; others glared at Marcus with unmistakable, burning disgust.

Every pathetic attempt to poke holes in the timeline or question the validity of the videos was brutally shut down by metadata experts and forensic accountants.
By the end of the first week, the defense table looked like a sinking ship. But the final nail in the coffin was yet to come. It was time for me to take the stand.
