Chapter 18 - Preparing for Trial

The months leading up to the trial were grueling, but they were also profoundly healing. I spent hours every day in Vivian’s office, meticulously going over my testimony, reviewing the brutal videos, and preparing myself for the psychological warfare of the courtroom.

I didn't do it alone. My father was a constant, unyielding pillar of strength, sitting beside me through every difficult session. My mother organized therapy sessions to help me process the trauma that Marcus had inflicted on my mind.

"They are going to try to break you on the stand, Clara," Vivian warned me one evening as we reviewed the defense’s strategy. "His lawyer will ask you why you stayed for three years. He will try to make you look complicit."

"I know," I replied, staring at the thick binder of evidence. "But I also know the truth. I stayed because I was terrified. I stayed because he systematically isolated me from everyone I loved. But I am not isolated anymore."

I looked out the window of the law firm at the Boston skyline. I was no longer the frightened, submissive girl Marcus had controlled. I had forged my pain into armor.

"I am ready, Vivian," I said, my voice steady and resolute. "Put me on the stand. Let him look at me and realize that the woman he tried to destroy is the one who is going to end him."

The night before the trial commenced, my father walked into my bedroom. He handed me a small, velvet box. Inside was a delicate, silver necklace with a pendant of a phoenix rising from the ashes.

"You survived the fire, Clara," my father whispered, kissing my forehead. "Tomorrow, you show the world how high you can fly."
