Chapter 28 - The Missing Fifty Million

The revelation hung in the air like a suffocating blanket. We had assumed Marcus was the mastermind, a greedy sociopath acting alone. We had completely underestimated the scale of the dark waters he was swimming in.

"Vivian, how much money are we talking about?" I asked, walking over to my computer terminal.

"When the federal judge ordered the asset forfeiture, we completely drained Marcus's Cayman Island accounts and routed the funds back into your family’s trust," Vivian recalled, pulling up the digital ledgers on her encrypted tablet. "It was close to eighty million dollars. We assumed forty million was what he stole from you, and the rest was his personal corporate hoarding."

"He wasn't hoarding it," my father growled, leaning over the table to look at the numbers. "He was holding it in escrow for the Obsidian Group. He was using the upcoming merger of our companies as a massive, legitimate washing machine for their dirty capital."

I stared at the financial charts, the sickening puzzle pieces finally snapping together. "That’s why he was so incredibly desperate to marry me. The merger was his deadline. If he didn't wash their money through my family's clean corporate infrastructure, Obsidian would have killed him."

"And because we intervened, Marcus failed his masters," Vivian said, adjusting her glasses. "The federal government seized the assets, but because of our rapid civil litigation, the bulk of those funds were redirected into your accounts to fund The Phoenix House and compensate his victims."

"We took their fifty million," I whispered, the gravity of the situation settling into my bones. "And now they want it back."

"They don't just want the money, Clara," my father warned, his dark eyes locked onto the photograph with the red crosshair. "A syndicate like Obsidian operates on absolute terror and reputation. If they allow a civilian to walk away with their capital, they look weak. They sent this photograph to prove they can touch us anytime, anywhere."

"They expect us to be terrified," I stated, picking up the black envelope and tossing it into the shredder. I turned to my father and Vivian, my fear utterly evaporating, replaced by a cold, calculating rage. "I refuse to be a hostage again. If Obsidian wants a war over this money, we will give them a war they will never forget."
