Chapter 27 - The Obsidian Syndicate

I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury I could no longer afford. I immediately picked up my encrypted cell phone and dialed my father’s private line. He answered on the second ring.

"Dad," I said, my voice dropping into a low, clinical register. "Where are you?"

"I am at the corporate headquarters, Clara. What's wrong?" he asked, instantly recognizing the shift in my tone.

"I need you to lock down the building and dispatch an extraction team to The Phoenix House. We have a breach in our operational security," I commanded, staring at the chilling photograph. "Someone took a long-lens surveillance shot of us at the Cape Cod house three days ago. They bypassed our maritime radar."

Less than an hour later, my father’s armored SUV pulled into the secure subterranean garage of The Phoenix House. He marched into my office, accompanied by Vivian Thorne, our ruthless prosecuting attorney, and a team of cyber-security experts.

I threw the photograph onto the glass coffee table. My father stared at the red crosshair, his jaw clenching so tightly I could see the muscles jumping beneath his skin. The apex predator had returned to his eyes.

"This is not a random stalker," my father rumbled, his voice vibrating with lethal intent. "Our maritime perimeter at the Cape is monitored by military-grade sonar. Whoever bypassed it has access to elite, untraceable technology."

Vivian picked up the black envelope, her eyes narrowing as she inspected the interior lining. "Clara, look at this. There is a watermark pressed into the inside of the paper. You can only see it if you hold it to the light."

I took the envelope and held it up to the desk lamp. Faintly embossed into the black paper was a symbol: a jagged, interlocking geometric snake made of obsidian stone.

Vivian’s face drained of color. She dropped the envelope onto the table as if it were radioactive. "The Obsidian Group," she whispered, a rare tremor of genuine fear in her voice.

"Who are they?" I demanded, crossing my arms.

"They aren't a street cartel, Clara. They are a ghost syndicate," Vivian explained, pacing the room. "They are an international consortium of corrupt politicians, rogue intelligence officers, and billionaire oligarchs. They use high-society shell games to launder illicit arms money."

"And what do they want with us?" my father asked, his hand resting on his holstered weapon.

"Marcus didn't just embezzle from your trust fund," Vivian realized, horror dawning in her eyes. "He was laundering money for Obsidian. When we seized his offshore accounts, we didn't just take his money. We took theirs."
