Chapter 20 - The Defense Falters

"The prosecution calls Clara Vance to the stand."
A hushed silence fell over the courtroom as I walked confidently to the witness box. I placed my hand on the Bible, swore to tell the truth, and sat down. I adjusted the microphone, letting my gaze drift across the room before finally locking eyes with Marcus.
He looked pathetic.
The DA guided me through my testimony gently, allowing me to detail the insidious, terrifying escalation of his abuse. I spoke clearly, without shedding a single tear. I didn't need to cry to prove my pain; the facts spoke for themselves.
Then, it was time for the cross-examination. Marcus’s lawyer, a slick, aggressive man named Caldwell, approached the podium.
"Ms. Vance," Caldwell began, his tone dripping with condescension. "You claim you were terrified of my client for three years. Yet, you continued to plan a multi-million dollar wedding, smile in public photos, and sign joint financial documents. If you were so frightened, why didn't you simply leave?"
I leaned forward, my voice ringing clearly through the courtroom.
"I smiled because he threatened to ruin my father’s company if I embarrassed him," I stated, staring coldly at Caldwell. "I planned the wedding because he told me that if I left, he would make sure I never saw my family again. I was a hostage in my own life, Mr. Caldwell. Abuse is not always a locked door; sometimes, it is the systematic destruction of a woman’s will to fight back."
Caldwell faltered, clearly not expecting me to be so composed.

"But you did fight back," Caldwell stammered. "You gathered evidence for months. You clearly had the agency to leave."
"I gathered evidence because I knew a man with Marcus's wealth would never be held accountable without irrefutable proof," I countered flawlessly. "I didn't just want to escape. I wanted to make sure he could never do it to anyone else."
