Justice in the courtroom was only one part of my closure. The other part involved taking back everything he had tried to steal.
With Marcus convicted, Vivian and my father’s legal team aggressively pursued the civil litigation. We didn't just freeze his accounts; we legally seized them as restitution for the embezzlement and the emotional damages.
His luxury penthouse, the one he had turned into a high-tech prison, was liquidated. His sports cars, his stock options, and the fraudulent offshore accounts were completely emptied and transferred directly back to my family’s trust.
But I didn't want his dirty money.
I sat in my father’s office, staring at a check for millions of dollars sitting on the mahogany desk.
"What do you want to do with it, Clara?" my father asked gently.
"I don't want a single cent of it," I replied. "It's tainted."
I picked up a pen and endorsed the entire sum over to a newly established foundation. I used Marcus’s liquidated empire to fully fund and construct the largest, most advanced domestic violence shelter and legal aid clinic in the state of Massachusetts.
