Chapter 15 - The Bail Hearing

A week later, the media circus descended upon the Suffolk County Courthouse for Marcus’s bail hearing.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by my father and Vivian. The courtroom was packed to the brim with reporters, all hungry for a glimpse of the fallen golden boy.

The heavy wooden door beside the judge's bench opened, and Marcus was led in by two bailiffs. He was wearing an orange county jumpsuit, his wrists handcuffed to a waist chain. The arrogant, untouchable groom who had sneered at me on the altar was completely gone. He looked exhausted, pale, and thoroughly defeated.

When his eyes scanned the gallery and locked onto mine, he visibly flinched. I did not look away. I held his gaze with cold, hard defiance until he was forced to look down at his shackles.

His expensive, high-powered defense attorney stood up.

"Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the community with no prior criminal record. He is not a flight risk. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount so he can prepare his defense from home."

Vivian stood up immediately, her presence dominating the courtroom.

"Objection, Your Honor. The defendant is a massive flight risk. He has been indicted for embezzling millions of dollars into offshore accounts, funds he could easily use to flee the country. Furthermore, we have submitted audio recordings of the defendant explicitly threatening the victim’s life if she ever exposed him. He is a profound, documented danger to my client."

The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for nonsense, reviewed the thick file in front of her. She looked down at Marcus over her glasses.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, her voice echoing in the silent room. "Given the overwhelming severity of the physical evidence, the financial fraud, and the documented threats of violence, I find you to be a significant threat to the community. Bail is denied. You will remain in county custody until your trial."

Marcus collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his chained hands as his mother wailed in the back of the courtroom. The gavel struck the sounding block, sealing his fate.
