Chapter 3 - The Bruised Veil

Now, standing at the grand altar, the heavy church organ music slowly faded into a reverent, breathless silence.
The groom looked down at her through the thick, intricate white lace of her expensive bridal veil.
He was smiling lovingly, a masterful performance designed to fool everyone in the room.
He leaned in closer, fully expecting her to play the role of the blushing, obedient, and silent bride.
He whispered how beautiful she looked, a sickeningly sweet lie that made her stomach churn.
But as she looked up at his arrogant, deceptive face, a raw, unyielding surge of courage finally broke through her terror.
She remembered the pain from the night before, and the paralyzing fear was suddenly replaced by a cold-blooded resolve.
She refused to spend the rest of her life as his silent victim.
