Chapter 32 - Securing the Flock

The sheer, unadulterated evil of Julian’s threat ignited a blinding white rage in my chest. He wasn't just threatening my life; he was weaponizing the sanctuary I had built for abused women. He was targeting the innocent to force my hand.
Julian calmly walked past me, completely ignoring the barrel of my gun, and stepped into the private elevator. "Midnight tomorrow, Clara. Do not test me."
As the elevator doors closed, I lowered my weapon and turned to my father.
"We are not giving him the money," I stated, my voice shaking with fury. "If we pay him, we fund an international terror syndicate. We become complicit."
"We will not pay him a single cent," my father agreed, standing up and pressing the emergency intercom to summon his backup security teams. "But we must neutralize his leverage. We have to secure The Phoenix House immediately."
I didn't waste a second. I raced back to the shelter, my mind operating at maximum tactical capacity. We had seventy vulnerable women and children living at the facility. I could not risk a single hair on their heads.
I called an emergency meeting in the main dining hall. Looking out at the faces of the women who had trusted me with their safety, my heart broke, but I refused to show them fear.
"Ladies, listen to me carefully," I announced, projecting absolute, unwavering confidence. "We have received a credible security threat regarding this building. It is a precautionary measure, but your safety is my absolute highest priority. We are executing an emergency, highly secure relocation protocol."
I had anticipated the need for a fallback location when I first designed the shelter's operational parameters. I had secretly purchased a sprawling, heavily fortified decommissioned convent in upstate Vermont under a blind corporate LLC.

Within two hours, a fleet of unmarked, armored luxury buses arrived at the rear loading docks of The Phoenix House. We evacuated every single resident and staff member with flawless precision, moving them under the cover of a massive, heavily armed private security escort provided by my father.
By sunset, The Phoenix House was completely empty. It was no longer a vulnerability; it was an empty, hollow shell waiting to become a trap.
