Chapter 17 - The Confession of a Witness
As the trial date loomed closer, the sheer weight of the evidence against Marcus began to inspire others to step out of the shadows.
I was sitting in Vivian’s office, reviewing my testimony, when her paralegal knocked frantically on the door.
"Ms. Thorne, there is someone here to see you. She says she used to work for Marcus Sterling, and she has information."
A young woman in her late twenties walked into the office. She looked terrified, her hands clutching the strap of her purse. I recognized her immediately. It was Sarah, Marcus’s former executive assistant who had abruptly "resigned" a year ago and moved out of state.
"Sarah," I said gently, standing up. "It’s okay. You’re safe here."
Sarah burst into tears, sinking into a chair.
"I saw the news, Clara," Sarah sobbed. "I saw what he did to you. I couldn't stay quiet anymore."
Sarah confessed everything. She detailed how Marcus had subjected her to relentless emotional abuse, throwing heavy objects at her head when he was angry, and threatening to destroy her career if she ever spoke out. But her most crucial piece of evidence was a hidden flash drive she had stolen before she fled.
"He made me draft the fake financial documents for the trust," Sarah whispered, handing the drive to Vivian. "He bragged about it. He said you were too stupid to ever notice the money moving."
Vivian plugged the drive into her computer. Her eyes widened as she scrolled through the files.

"This is the smoking gun, Clara," Vivian said, looking up with a triumphant smile. "This proves premeditation. He didn't just embezzle the money; he planned the theft months before the wedding. With Sarah’s testimony, his defense is completely obliterated."
We weren't just going to put Marcus in prison. We were going to bury him under the prison.
