Chapter 16 - The Smear Campaign Fails
Marcus’s defense team, desperate and cornered, attempted a final, pathetic strategy to salvage his case. If they couldn't beat the evidence, they decided to attack the victim.
Two weeks before the trial, a sleazy tabloid blog published a "leaked" story citing an anonymous source. The article claimed that I had a history of mental instability, that I had fabricated the abuse for financial gain, and that I had coerced Marcus into the embezzlement scheme.
"They are trying to poison the jury pool," Vivian said, tossing a printed copy of the article onto my desk.
"Let them try," I said, feeling a cold fire burning in my chest. "We aren't going to hide."
Vivian immediately filed a massive defamation lawsuit against the tabloid and the defense attorney’s firm, demanding they produce the "anonymous source." Under the threat of crushing legal penalties, the tabloid caved within twenty-four hours. They admitted the source was an intern paid by Eleanor Sterling to plant the fake story.
We didn't just stop at a retraction. Vivian took the proof of the fabricated story directly to the District Attorney.

The next morning, the police arrived at the Sterling estate. Eleanor was arrested on her pristine front lawn for witness tampering and obstruction of justice. The news helicopters captured her being shoved into the back of a police cruiser in her silk pajamas, screaming at the cameras.
Marcus’s defense team was humiliated, their credibility completely shredded before the trial even began. They had tried to paint me as a manipulative liar, but all they achieved was providing the prosecution with even more ammunition. The walls were rapidly closing in, and there was no escape left.
