Chapter 4 - The Silent Witness

The discovery of the four-million-dollar theft fundamentally rewired my brain. The crippling, suffocating grief that had pinned me to my bed vanished, instantly replaced by a cold, calculating, and absolute fury.

But I knew I couldn't confront them. If I revealed what I knew, Derek would destroy the evidence, drain the remaining accounts, and likely ensure I ended up committed to a psychiatric facility—or worse. I needed an airtight case. I needed them to feel completely, unbreakably confident in their control.

I began taking long "therapy walks" in the afternoons. During one of these walks, I purchased a set of high-definition, audio-enabled micro-cameras using cash. I spent the next three days installing them with surgical precision while Derek was at the corporate office and Marlene was getting her hair done. I placed one in the living room inside a bookshelf, one in Derek’s home office disguised as a phone charger, and the most crucial one right above our bed, wired into the casing of the smoke detector.

Living with my abusers after discovering their plot was the most grueling psychological endurance test of my life. I had to perfectly maintain the facade of the broken, heavily medicated wife. I slurred my words slightly at dinner. I let my hair go unwashed for days. I stared blankly at the television while they openly discussed company finances mere feet away from me, assuming I was too checked out to comprehend their words.

Every time Derek rolled his eyes at my "pathetic state," and every time Marlene sneered at me from across the kitchen island, I focused on the tiny, blinking blue lights hidden around the house. I was no longer a victim trapped in a nightmare. I was a predator, silently gathering ammunition.
