Chapter 12 - The Usurper

With the board officially backing him due to the forged medical incompetence filings, Derek fully embraced his role as the undisputed king of my father’s empire. He strutted into the corporate headquarters every morning, firing executives who had been loyal to my family for decades and replacing them with sycophants who wouldn't question the bleeding ledgers.

Marlene, meanwhile, firmly established herself as the grand lady of the estate. She fired my long-time housekeeper and hired an entirely new staff, ordering them around with brutal, aristocratic cruelty. She threw extravagant luncheons, casually telling the local high society that I was receiving intensive psychiatric treatment in a luxury facility out of state.

"It's incredible how easily people believe the worst about a woman if a man in a nice suit says it confidently," I remarked to Detective Shaw as we reviewed the wiretap transcripts of Marlene’s phone calls.

"Arrogance is a hell of a drug," Shaw replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "But their timeline is accelerating. They are setting up the final play."

Derek and Marlene weren't content with merely skimming millions from the company's operating budget. They wanted the ultimate, massive payday before the impending city investigations into the stairwell collapse could potentially blow back on them.

Together, they prepared to sell the entire construction firm to Halcyon Development, a massive, ruthless international conglomerate known for absorbing local businesses and stripping them for parts.

Derek agreed to sell my father's legacy for a mere fraction of its actual market value. On paper, it looked like a desperate fire sale by a stressed CEO. But Elena’s forensic team found the hidden clause. In exchange for the massively discounted purchase price, Halcyon executives had agreed to route a private, untraceable eight-million-dollar "consulting fee" directly into a secure offshore bank account in Dubai. An account solely controlled by Derek and Marlene.
