Chapter 2 - The Hollow Years

The house Marlene claimed to own had actually belonged to my father. It was a sprawling, mid-century estate built on the sweat and blood of his construction empire. After Dad passed away from a sudden, massive stroke two years ago, grief had completely hollowed me out. I was a ghost walking through my own life, unable to eat, sleep, or focus.

That was when Derek stepped in, playing the role of the ultimate devoted husband.

“Let me handle the paperwork, darling,” he would whisper, kissing my forehead while placing stacks of legal documents in front of my vacant eyes. “You just focus on healing. I’ll take care of the bills, the company, the lawyers. Everything.”

I signed whatever he put in front of me. I was too exhausted to read the fine print.

Shortly after the funeral, Marlene moved into the guest wing under the guise of “temporarily helping out” while I recovered. The temporary arrangement quickly became permanent. The subtle shifts began within months. Marlene redecorated my mother’s parlor without asking. Derek began making executive decisions at the family construction firm without consulting the board.

Soon, the false sympathy evaporated. Their tone shifted from overly concerned to sharply condescending. They spoke to me like I was an incompetent employee who was failing to meet her quotas.

“You’re wearing that today?” Marlene would scoff, eyeing my sweatpants as I drifted toward the kitchen. “No wonder Derek is so stressed, coming home to a wife who has completely let herself go.”

They began treating me like property. A broken, defective piece of furniture that came with the house. They fundamentally believed I was a shattered woman who would never wake up from her depression. They were wrong.
