Chapter 22 - The Architect of Shadows

I handed Clara a steaming mug of chamomile tea, sitting directly across from her. Elias stood quietly by the door, an immovable mountain of security.

"Julian Vance," I repeated the name, feeling a faint prickle of recognition. During my forensic dissection of Derek’s shell companies, the name 'Vance Holdings' had briefly appeared on a deeply buried routing ledger, but it had vanished behind a wall of international encryption before I could trace it.

"Julian wasn't just a developer," Clara explained, her hands shaking so badly the tea spilled over the rim of the mug. "He was Derek’s silent partner. When Derek was laundering the money from your father’s company, Julian was the one providing the offshore infrastructure. He took a massive cut of the profits."

My blood ran cold. The monster I had locked away was just the public face of a much darker syndicate.

"When Derek and Marlene were arrested, the federal government seized all the visible accounts," Clara continued, unlatching her briefcase with trembling fingers. "But Julian is brilliant. He saw the raid coming. He managed to sever the digital ties to his own accounts before the FBI could freeze them. He walked away with nearly twenty million dollars of the stolen money."

She pulled a thick stack of printed, heavily encrypted bank statements from the briefcase and slid them across the mahogany desk toward me.

"I used to be his bookkeeper before we married," Clara said, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "I found these files hidden on a secure server in our basement. He is using the stolen money to bribe municipal judges and politicians to seize low-income properties. When he caught me looking at the server this morning, he told me that if I ever breathed a word of it, I would disappear into the river."

I picked up the bank statements. The numbers practically leaped off the page, forming a familiar, sickening pattern.

"He thinks you are going to stay silent because you are terrified," I said, a cold, familiar fire igniting in my chest. "He thinks you are powerless."
