Chapter 37 - The Digital Cage

If we were going to fight a titan of the tech industry, we needed our own digital apex predator. I immediately summoned David. Over the past five years, David had transitioned from a rogue, underground hacker into the foundation’s Chief Director of Cybersecurity.
David walked into the office carrying an array of specialized scanning equipment. He didn't offer a polite greeting; he went straight to work.
"If she ditched her phone and her car, the tracker has to be on her person," David muttered, waving a highly sensitive radio-frequency scanner over Maya’s jacket, her shoes, and her purse. The scanner remained completely silent.
David frowned, adjusting his thick glasses. "No active RF signals. No Bluetooth anomalies. Maya, did Elliot ever gift you any jewelry? A watch? Anything custom-made?"
Maya shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "No. But... six months ago, he insisted I get Lasik surgery. I have a minor astigmatism. He paid for a private, exclusive clinic to do the procedure."
David froze. He slowly lowered the scanner, looking at me with a mixture of absolute horror and morbid fascination. "Lena, it's not on her. It's in her."
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, standing up from my desk.
"Apex Dynamics doesn't just build software; they acquire biomedical tech startups," David explained, typing furiously on his laptop. "There is a new prototype of ocular lenses designed to monitor biometric data for health insurance companies. They transmit a micro-burst of encrypted data via localized mesh networks. If Elliot bribed the clinic to implant one of those prototypes instead of standard Lasik lenses..."
"He is literally tracking my physical location through my own eyes?" Maya gasped, clutching her face, a wave of visceral nausea hitting her.
"It’s the ultimate digital cage," Elena said, her voice filled with absolute disgust. "It’s a horrific violation of medical ethics, privacy laws, and basic human rights."
"Can you block it?" I asked David, my voice hard as steel.
May you like
"I can do better than block it," David smiled, a dark, brilliant glimmer in his eyes. "I can spoof the signal. I can make Elliot’s tracking software believe Maya is currently sitting in a hotel room in Paris, while she stays safely right here in Boston. But Lena, if we want to take Elliot down, we need to prove he illegally accessed prototype biomedical tech to stalk his wife."
"Then we don't just protect Maya," I declared, turning to Elena. "We go on the offensive. We burn Apex Dynamics to the ground before they ever ring that IPO bell."
