Chapter 11 - The Weapon of Silence

We had the evidence to arrest them for the assault and the initial financial theft, but Sarah Jenkins, the prosecutor, knew we needed more to secure federal racketeering charges and ensure a decades-long prison sentence. We needed Derek and Marlene to become reckless. We needed them to openly expose their absolute control over the offshore accounts and legally bind themselves to the shell companies.
So, we implemented the most excruciating psychological tactic in the playbook. I gave them exactly what arrogant, narcissistic people always mistake for ultimate weakness: absolute, unbroken silence.
For nine agonizing days, I did not appear publicly. I didn't answer emails, I didn't contest Derek's public narrative, and I didn't reach out to my friends to defend myself. I sat in the secure shelter, watching the news cycle churn.
The silence drove Derek into a frenzy of overconfidence. Believing I had completely surrendered and was hiding in a drug-induced stupor somewhere, he moved with terrifying, unchecked speed to consolidate his empire before I could potentially recover.
"He’s escalating," Elena reported on the fifth day, walking into the shelter with a fresh stack of corporate filings. "He officially called an emergency board vote this morning. He used a fabricated medical report from a doctor on his payroll to declare you medically incompetent and unfit to serve as the majority shareholder."

I watched a video clip on Elena’s tablet. It showed Marlene happily hosting a lavish investor dinner at my house. She was standing in my dining room, pouring expensive champagne, and wearing my late mother’s priceless diamond necklace around her throat.
"Let her enjoy the diamonds," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "She's going to need the memory of them when she's trading her silk robes for a county jumpsuit."
