Chapter 17 - The Ballroom Crashers

The grand ballroom of the downtown luxury hotel was packed to absolute capacity. The atmosphere was buzzing with corporate excitement and flowing champagne. A massive, professionally printed banner reading Halcyon Development & Grant Construction: A New Era hung proudly above the elevated stage.
Derek stood confidently at the polished acrylic podium, wearing a bespoke gray suit, looking every inch the victorious, triumphant CEO. Marlene sat in the front row VIP section, wearing a designer dress and sipping a mimosa, basking in the envious stares of her socialite friends.
The heavy, brass-studded oak doors at the very back of the ballroom suddenly swung open with a resounding, undeniable crash.
The low hum of corporate chatter instantly died.
I walked straight down the center aisle. I did not rush. I walked with the slow, measured, and absolute authority of an apex predator entering its domain. My white suit starkly contrasted with the sea of dark corporate attire. Flanking me on my right was Elena Ruiz, holding a thick stack of legal filings. Flanking me on my left was Detective Shaw, his gold police badge clearly visible on his belt.
Derek’s triumphant smile vanished first, melting into a mask of pure, unadulterated shock. Marlene’s crystal champagne glass slipped from her manicured fingers second, shattering loudly against the marble floor, spilling golden liquid across her expensive shoes.

Dozens of loyal company employees turned their heads, their jaws dropping as they recognized me. News reporters in the press pit immediately lifted their heavy cameras, the rapid flashes exploding like a strobe light across the vast, silent room.
I kept my eyes locked entirely on the man standing at the podium. The reckoning had finally arrived.
