Chapter 36 - The New Frontier

The peace I had found on that rooftop was absolute, but I was not naive enough to believe the world had suddenly run out of monsters. Five years of running the foundation had taught me a profound truth: abuse does not disappear; it evolves. While Derek and Julian had used brute physical and financial force to build their cages, a new generation of abusers was weaponizing technology.

It was a crisp Tuesday morning when the reinforced gates of our primary Boston campus opened to admit a sleek, black town car. Elias, whose graying temples only made him look more intimidating, personally escorted the new arrival into my office.

Her name was Maya Sterling. She was trembling so violently she could barely hold the cup of tea I offered her. She didn't have the visible, physical bruises I had once worn, but the dark, hollow exhaustion in her eyes painted a picture of absolute, suffocating terror.

"He always finds me," Maya whispered, her eyes darting frantically toward the heavy mahogany door. "I threw my phone in the river. I bought a burner with cash. I swapped cars three times. But within twenty-four hours, his private security is always waiting outside my hotel room. He told me the world is too small for me to ever hide from him."

I sat across from her, my expression calm and unwavering. "Who is your husband, Maya?"

"Elliot Pierce," she choked out the name as if it were poison. "He is the CEO of Apex Dynamics. He builds predictive algorithm software for international tech firms."

Elena Ruiz, who was sitting by the window reviewing legal files, suddenly looked up, her face paling. "Apex Dynamics? Lena, they are preparing for a massive, multi-billion-dollar IPO next month. Elliot Pierce is practically Silicon Valley royalty."

"He isn't royalty to me," I said, leaning forward and resting my hands on the desk. "Maya, listen to me carefully. He is not a god. He is not omniscient. He is using a digital tether, and whatever he tied to you, we are going to sever it today. You are inside a Faraday cage right now. No signal goes in or out of this room."

Maya let out a ragged, breaking sob, the sheer relief of finally being believed washing over her. "He drained my personal accounts. He locked me out of our smart home. He hijacked my email to send messages to my family claiming I was having a psychotic break. He trapped me in a digital cell."

"I know exactly what it feels like to be erased," I said, a cold, familiar fire reigniting in my chest. "But Elliot Pierce just made a fatal mistake. He forced you to my doorstep."
