Chapter 3 - The Language of Numbers

What Derek and Marlene did not know, and what they had fatally underestimated, was that my numbness had evaporated exactly six weeks earlier.

Before I met Derek, before my father died and my world collapsed, I was one of the top forensic accountants in the city. I spent my days unraveling complex corporate fraud, tracking hidden offshore accounts, and testifying as an expert witness in federal court. Numbers were my native language. Numbers possessed a beautiful, unyielding purity; they never lied, even when the people attached to them did.

One rainy Tuesday, while Derek and Marlene were at a country club luncheon, I ventured into my father’s old home office. I was looking for a specific photo album, but my eyes landed on a stack of bank statements Derek had carelessly left out. He assumed I was too broken, too heavily medicated on grief, to ever glance at them.

I picked up the top sheet. My professional instincts, dormant for two years, flared to life instantly.

The numbers didn't align. The operational costs for my father’s construction firm had spiked by thirty percent, yet no new major projects had been secured. I logged into the company’s secure server using a backdoor administrative portal my father and I had set up years ago—one Derek didn't know existed.

Over the next four hours, the horrifying scope of his betrayal materialized on my screen. I found dozens of unauthorized wire transfers, a labyrinth of fake vendor invoices, and a blatantly forged signature giving Derek full voting control of my father’s company. Nearly four million dollars had been siphoned out of the firm's primary accounts and funneled directly into dummy LLCs tightly tied to Marlene’s maiden name. They were bleeding my family's legacy dry.
