Chapter 29 - The Midnight Deadline

We arrived back at the foundation exactly at 11:50 p.m. The storm outside had intensified, thunder rattling the reinforced windows of my office.
Clara was pacing nervously near the fireplace, while Detective Shaw and Elena stood by the desk, reviewing the tactical perimeter reports.
"We have the ledgers," I announced, tossing the heavy flash drive onto the mahogany desk. "Julian is exposed. Every bribe, every offshore account, every corrupt politician he owns is thoroughly documented on that drive."
Shaw let out a long, slow whistle, staring at the small piece of plastic. "This is the holy grail. I can take this directly to the federal prosecutor. Julian will be facing life in a supermax facility before the sun comes up."
"He isn't going to wait for the sun to come up," Clara warned, her voice trembling as she looked at the digital clock on the wall. "It is 11:55 p.m. He promised to burn this building down at midnight. When he realizes his vault was breached, he won't run. He will escalate. He will want blood."
Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated violently on the desk. The caller ID displayed an encrypted, unknown number.
I locked eyes with Shaw, who immediately initiated a trace program on his laptop. I answered the call, putting it on speakerphone.
"You are a remarkably bold woman, Lena," Julian’s smooth, cultured voice echoed through the office, though a terrifying, lethal edge had replaced his usual calm. "You actually breached my vault. I am genuinely impressed."

"I told you not to threaten my sanctuary, Julian," I replied, my voice as cold and absolute as a glacier.
"You stole my digital ledgers, but you made one fatal miscalculation," Julian sneered, the sound of heavy rain audible in the background of the call. "I am not a man who hides behind lawyers. Look out your front window, Lena. I am here."
