Chapter 7 - The Master Bedroom Restored

On Saturday morning, two professional interior design teams and three contractors arrived at the house.
For three days, the house buzzed with activity. All of Melissa's ugly, pretentious decorations were ripped down and thrown into a industrial dumpster on the curb. Every wall was repainted in warm, soothing cream and sage colors.
In the master bedroom—where Evelyn had lounged in luxury while my mother slept on concrete—we completely gutted the space.
We installed a brand-new, top-of-the-line orthopaedic king-sized bed, soft silk curtains, a cozy electric fireplace, and a massive walk-in closet filled with brand-new, comfortable clothes for my mother. On the walls, we hung framed photographs of my father, my mother’s childhood memories, and pictures of our family from happier times.
On Tuesday afternoon, I led my mother up the stairs, holding her hand, while she wore a soft silk blindfold.
"Sarah, what are you doing?" she giggled softly, sounding younger and lighter than she had in decades.
"Just trust me, Mom," I smiled, leading her into the doorway of the master suite.
I untied the blindfold.
My mother opened her eyes. She stood frozen in the center of the sunlit room, looking at the plush bed, the crackling fireplace, and the large portrait of my father hanging directly above the mantle.
She covered her mouth with both hands, gasping for air as fresh tears welled in her eyes.
"This... this is my room?" she whispered, turning to look at me in absolute wonder.
"This was always your room, Mom," I said, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. "Nobody will ever take it from you again. No one will ever order you around, no one will ever make you scrub a floor, and no one will ever hurt you."
May you like
She turned around and hugged me tightly, burying her face into my shoulder, weeping tears of pure relief and happiness.
"Thank you, my sweet girl," she sobbed. "Thank you for bringing me home."
