Chapter 34 - Evelyn's Shield

"She doesn't need to be saved by anyone, Arthur."
The quiet, clear voice cut through the heavy air like a sword.
Arthur froze. His head snapped toward the front porch.
Evelyn walked down the steps. She wasn't wearing the fragile robes of a victim or hiding behind a curtain. She wore a simple dark green dress, her posture straight, her eyes fixed entirely on the man who had tormented her for decades.
She walked right up to the gate, stepping directly beside me. She didn't shiver. She didn't avert her eyes.
"Evelyn," Arthur gasped softly, his artificial composure wavering for the briefest second. "Look at you. They've filled your head with nonsense."
"No one filled my head with anything, Arthur," Evelyn said, her voice steady and resonant. "For twenty years, you kept me in a cage made of guilt and fear. You convinced me that without you, I was nothing."
"I took care of you!" Arthur hissed, his mask slipping as his fists clenched against the gate. "I gave you security! I protected you from your own weakness!"
"You didn't protect me," Evelyn replied coldly. "You buried me. But I am out of the ground now, Arthur. And I am never going back."
"You think this girl can protect you?" Arthur sneered, pointing a finger at me. "I will tear her life apart! I will destroy her career, her bank accounts, her reputation—"
"Touch my daughter," Evelyn interrupted, stepping even closer until she was inches from his face across the iron bars, "and I will personally sign the affidavits Mr. Pendelton prepared. I will hand the federal prosecutor every single document regarding your offshore shell accounts."
Arthur stared at her, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He had never seen her like this. The timid, compliant woman was gone.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Arthur spat out, backing toward his car.
"The mistake was staying with you," Evelyn declared. "Now get off my daughter's land."
