Chapter 15 - The Breaking Point

|

Two days later, Arthur hosted his annual charity dinner at the estate. He had invited prominent city officials, local business owners, and hospital board members—all to project the image of a wealthy, generous patriarch.

I knew this was my chance.

I didn't dress in my usual scrubs. I wore a formal black dress, put my hair in a neat chignon, and brought my hospital ID badge tucked inside my clutch. I walked right past the valet, slipping through the heavy wooden front doors amidst a group of wealthy donors.

The grand dining room was glittering with crystal chandeliers and silver tableware. Arthur stood at the head of the long table, holding a glass of champagne, surrounded by laughing guests.

And there was my mother.

She was dressed in a plain, oversized black uniform, carrying a heavy silver tray loaded with hot appetizers. Her hands were shaking so violently that the porcelain dish rattled against the metal.

"Evelyn, speed it up," Arthur said smoothly to the room, though his tone had a razor-sharp edge. "Our guests are waiting. Try not to spill anything tonight."

A few guests chuckled politely, assuming it was harmless banter. My mother bowed her head, whispering, "Yes, Arthur," as she reached forward to serve a guest.

Her knee gave out.

With a soft cry of pain, she stumbled forward, the heavy silver tray slipping from her fingers and crashing onto the hardwood floor. Hot soup and appetizers spilled across the rug, splashing onto Arthur's polished shoes.

The room fell dead silent.

Arthur's face flushed deep purple. He grabbed my mother by her upper arm—the exact spot where her bruises were still healing—and yanked her upward with terrifying force. "You incompetent fool!" he hissed under his breath, forgetting for a split second that the room was watching. "Can't you do a single thing right?"

"Let go of her!"

My voice shattered the silence like a gunshot. I stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, marching straight toward the head of the table.
