Chapter 40 - The Secret Meeting

"You can't go," Clara said immediately, slamming her tablet onto the table. "It's a suicide trap, Sarah!"
"She's right," Mr. Pendelton agreed sternly. "Arthur is cornered. A cornered animal doesn't negotiate; it strikes."
"I know," I said, looking at the two of them. "Which is why I'm not going there to negotiate. I'm going there to trap him."
I turned to Chief Higgins, who was sitting in the corner of the room. "Chief, if I go to that warehouse wearing an audio transmitter and a GPS tracker, can your SWAT team surround the perimeter without being spotted?"
Higgins stroked his chin thoughtfully. "The harbor warehouse is completely open, but we can position snipers on the adjacent grain silos and keep three tactical units in covered vans two hundred yards out."
"Sarah, no," Evelyn pleaded, clutching my arm. "I can't let you risk your life for this!"
"Mom," I said gently, kissing her forehead. "He threatened you and everyone who helped us. As long as he thinks he holds power over us, we will never be truly safe. This ends tonight."
By eight-forty-five PM, I was dressed in a dark jacket, a hidden microphone taped securely beneath my collar, and a micro-GPS unit stitched into my boot.
Chief Higgins handed me an earpiece. "We will hear every word spoken inside that building. The moment he utters a physical threat or reaches for a weapon, we move in."
I pulled up to the abandoned harbor warehouse at five minutes to nine. The building was a massive, rusted steel structure overlooking the dark, choppy waters of the bay.
I killed my headlights, took a deep breath, and stepped out into the cold night air.
I pushed open the creaky metal side door and walked into the dark, cavernous space.
"I'm here, Arthur!" my voice echoed off the high corrugated ceiling.

A single spotlight flickered on at the far end of the warehouse, illuminating a wooden chair.
Arthur stepped out of the shadows, holding a sleek silver revolver in his hand.
