Chapter 4 - The Arrest

Melissa’s jaw dropped. "Officers! She’s lying! This is a family dispute over real estate!"
"Ma'am, quiet down," the lead officer ordered sternly. He turned to the social worker, who immediately walked over to my mother, gently taking her arm and examining the visible bruises on her face and wrist.
"These are fresh impact injuries," the social worker noted, taking out a camera and photographing my mother’s face. "The bruising pattern aligns with a physical assault."
"She dropped my plate!" Melissa blurted out before Derek could grab her arm to shut her up.
The room went dead silent.
The lead officer looked at Melissa with utter disbelief. "Did you just admit to striking a senior citizen over a dropped plate, ma'am?"
"No! I mean—she tripped! It was an accident!" Melissa stammered, backing away toward the kitchen counter.
"Melissa Howard," the officer said, pulling handcuffs from his utility belt. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for domestic battery on an elderly person."
"No! Get your hands off me! Derek! Do something!" Melissa shrieked as the metal cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. She kicked and thrash as the officers pulled her toward the front door. "You can't do this! I have connections! My family owns real estate!"
"Take her out," the officer said to his partner.
Evelyn screamed in horror as her daughter was dragged out the front entrance in tears, her silk dress rumpled and her hair a tangled mess.
The lead officer turned to Derek. "Mr. Vance, we have statements indicating you witnessed this assault and failed to intervene while serving as a secondary caretaker, and we are opening an investigation into financial fraud regarding your mother's bank accounts."
Derek sank to his knees on the hardwood floor, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a child. "Mom... please... tell them to stop... please..."

My mother looked down at her son. For two years, she had stayed silent out of fear of destroying his marriage. But as she looked at his sniveling, cowardly figure, the fear in her eyes finally turned into quiet, dignified resolve.
"You destroyed yourself, Derek," my mother said softly, her voice no longer trembling. "I have no son left to save."
