Chapter 24 - The Crimson Dress

|
Two days before the grand party, I took my mother shopping at an upscale boutique in the city.
For years, Arthur had forced her to wear bland, dark colors—greys, blacks, and dull navy blues—to make her invisible. But today was different.
As we walked through the racks of elegant evening wear, my mother stopped in front of a display. Hanging on a silver mannequin was a striking, floor-length crimson gown. It was made of rich silk, with a subtle draped neckline and long, elegant sleeves.
"Oh, Sarah," she gasped softly, touching the vibrant red fabric. "Look at this color."
"It's breathtaking, Mom," I said, pulling it off the rack. "Try it on."
"Oh, no, I couldn't," she hesitated, blushing. "A woman my age in bright red? Wouldn't people think it's too bold?"
"Bold is exactly what you are, Mom," I insisted, pushing her gently toward the dressing room. "You survived a nightmare and came out victorious. Put it on."
Five minutes later, the fitting room curtain pulled back.
I gasped, my hand going to my mouth.
My mother looked magnificent. The crimson dress highlighted her radiant skin, and her silver hair framed her face like a halo of strength. She stood tall, her shoulders back, staring at herself in the full-length mirror with a look of quiet awe.
"I look... alive," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
May you like
"You look like a queen, Mom," I said, stepping up behind her and wrapping my arms around her waist. "You look like the matriarch of our family."
She smiled at her reflection, a real, dazzling smile that reached her eyes. "I'll take it," she declared. "Red it is."
