Chapter 31 - The Shadow at the Gate

The morning sun failed to warm the icy chill settling inside my chest. I kept my hand hovering near my phone as my mother polished off her coffee, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing outside our door.
"Mom," I said gently, offering a warm smile. "Why don't you head upstairs and finish that book you started? I need to make a quick work call."
Evelyn smiled softly, setting her empty mug in the sink. "Of course, Sarah. Don't work too hard."
The moment her footsteps faded up the stairs, I stepped onto the porch. Resting on the top step near the gate was a small black velvet box. My heart hammered against my ribs as I approached it, using a tissue to pick it up without leaving fingerprints.
Inside lay a heavy silver key and a folded piece of parchment.
The master bedroom key to the estate, the handwritten note read. You took what belongs to me, Sarah. Return her by sunset, or I will reclaim her myself.
My jaw set firm. I snapped the box shut and immediately pulled out my phone, dialing Chief Higgins directly.
"Higgins," the chief answered on the second ring. "Tell me you're calling with good news, Sarah."
"Arthur left a package on my porch," I said, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. "A key and a written threat. He gave us until sunset."
"I'm sending two unmarked units to secure your perimeter right now," Higgins replied without hesitation. "And Sarah? Don't engage if he shows up. Let us handle him."
"He thinks he's dealing with the scared teenager he used to bully," I whispered, looking toward the end of the driveway where tire tracks marked the gravel. "He's about to find out how wrong he is."
Five minutes later, Clara Mercer's car pulled into the driveway. She stepped out, her briefcase in hand, her eyes blazing with professional fury.
"We have the emergency protection order drafted," Clara said, walking up the steps. "If Arthur so much as breathes near this property, he goes straight to a holding cell."

"He won't care about a piece of paper, Clara," I said grimly.
"He will when Mr. Pendelton freezes his offshore liquidity," Clara replied with a dark smile. "Arthur is about to realize his empire is built on sand."
