Chapter 41 - The Wire and the Trap

Arthur looked completely unhinged. His tie was undone, his expensive suit jacket was gone, and his eyes were bloodshot with manic fury.
"You actually came," Arthur said, his voice echoing in the vast space. "Stupid, arrogant girl."
"Put the gun down, Arthur," I said, standing fifty feet away, keeping my hands visible. "The police know I'm here."
Arthur laughed—a dry, chilling sound. "The police? Do you really think I care about the police anymore? My company is gone. My bank accounts are frozen. My reputation is in ashes. You destroyed twenty years of my life in three days!"
"You destroyed your own life when you decided to treat my mother like a prisoner and steal her inheritance," I shot back, keeping my voice loud and clear for the microphone.
Arthur took three slow steps toward me, pointing the gun directly at my chest.
"She was nothing before me!" Arthur roared. "I gave her purpose! And you took her from me!"
"She hates you, Arthur," I said coldly. "She despises every second she ever spent with you. She told me herself."
Arthur’s face twisted in pure rage. He raised the revolver, aiming straight between my eyes.
"Then I'll start by killing you," Arthur hissed. "And then I'll go back to that house and finish what I started thirty years ago."
"That's all we needed," I said softly.
Before Arthur could react, heavy glass shattered high above us as SWAT officers rappelled down from the roof beams on tactical ropes.
BOOM! BOOM!
Flashbang grenades exploded across the concrete floor, blinding Arthur with white light and deafening noise.

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!" Higgins's voice boomed through a megaphone as tactical officers flooded through every exit.
Arthur stumbled backward, disoriented, waving the gun blindly—and fired a single shot into the dark.
