Chapter 2 - The Truth Exposed

The dining room went completely motionless. The guests leaned in, reading the official gold-embossed seal at the top of the county land records.

"Sarah Vance... Sole Owner," read one of Melissa’s clients aloud, staring at the paper in absolute shock.

Melissa snapped her head toward Derek, her teeth clenched. "Derek! What is she talking about? You told me your sister only chipped in a small down payment!"

Derek’s face drained of all color. He looked like a man standing in front of a firing squad. "Melissa... I... I thought..."

"He lied to you, Melissa," I cut in coldly. "Just like you’ve been lying to everyone in this room. Six years ago, I paid $650,000 in cash to buy this house outright for my mother after Dad died. I paid every property tax, every insurance policy, and every utility bill while working eighty-hour weeks in offshore disaster relief units."

"That doesn't matter!" Melissa suddenly screamed, slamming her hands on the table, her composure completely shattering. "We’ve lived here for two years! We established residency! Legally, you can't just walk in here and claim it!"

"I don't need to claim what is already legally mine, Melissa," I said smoothly. "What I do need to address, however, is elder abuse."

A collective gasp echoed across the table.

"Elder abuse?!" Melissa shouted, her face flushed red. "Are you insane? We let that old woman live here out of charity! She's ungrateful, clumsy, and—"

"And you slapped her across the face two hours ago," I said, my voice dropping to a icy register that chilled the entire room.

"She dropped my vintage plate!" Melissa shrieked.

"And you stole her bedroom," I continued, pointing toward the back hallway. "You forced a 66-year-old woman to sleep on a rusted folding cot beside the laundry machine while your mother sleeps in her master suite. You took her Social Security checks every month to pay for your designer clothes, and you hid her bruises under long sleeves."

My mother lowered her head, silent tears streaming down her bruised cheeks.

Several guests immediately pushed their chairs back from the table, looking at Melissa and Derek with absolute horror and disgust.

"Is this true, Derek?" asked an elderly gentleman at the end of the table—one of Derek's primary business partners. "You allowed your wife to strike your own mother?"

Derek stammered, unable to form a coherent sentence. "It... it was an accident... Mom slipped..."

"She didn't slip, Derek," I said, sliding a second set of photos across the table. "These are high-resolution photos of the finger-shaped bruises on her jaw and arms, taken thirty minutes ago. And these are the bank statements showing your wife forging my mother’s signature on monthly transfers."
