While the hospital rallied around me, a forensic accountant hired by our legal team was tearing Arthur's financial web apart.
Three weeks after the court hearing, our attorney, Clara Mercer, called us into her office. Mr. Pendelton joined us, sitting quietly in the corner with a proud smile.
"We hit the jackpot, Sarah," Clara said, turning her computer screen toward us. "When Arthur forced your mother to sign that power of attorney five years ago, he didn't just merge her accounts—he committed outright grand larceny."
Clara pointed to a series of wire transfers. "He transferred over $400,000 from your father's life insurance payout directly into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under his sole name. He used her pension money to pay off the mortgage on his estate, and he forged her signature on a quitclaim deed to steal her property in the valley."
My mother covered her face with her hands. "I signed papers he put in front of me... he told me they were tax forms. I trusted him."
"It doesn't matter what you signed, Evelyn," Clara said gently. "Fraud vitiates everything. Because he forged signatures and embezzled funds while acting as a fiduciary, he has committed multiple state and federal felonies."
"What does this mean for Mom?" I asked eagerly.
"It means the District Attorney is issuing an arrest warrant for Arthur Vance for grand theft, financial elder abuse, and forgery," Clara declared. "And every single penny he stole from your mother—plus interest—is being seized from his estate and returned to her."
My mother looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "All of it?"

That afternoon, police cruisers surrounded the Oakridge Estate. Neighbors—including Mr. Pendelton—watched as Arthur Vance was led out of his grand mansion in handcuffs, swarmed by news cameras, his public legacy destroyed forever.
