Chapter 46 - Evelyn's Testimony

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, leaving the house surrounded by police tape and emergency vehicles.
Evelyn stepped out of the panic room, looking surprisingly calm despite the horror of the night. She sat at the kitchen table while Chief Higgins and Agent Vance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation took notes.
"Evelyn," Agent Vance said gently, setting a digital recorder on the table. "Did your late husband ever mention an encrypted ledger or the name Crown Holdings to you?"
Evelyn looked at the table for a long moment, then slowly reached up to unclasp a thin gold locket she had worn around her neck for thirty years.
She set the locket on the table.
"My husband didn't die of a heart attack twenty years ago," Evelyn revealed softly, looking up at me with tears in her eyes. "He went into federal witness protection."
I gasped, my breath catching in my throat. "Mom... what?"
"He knew Arthur and the Crown Syndicate were coming for him," Evelyn explained, her voice trembling slightly. "He faked his death to protect you, Sarah. Before he disappeared, he gave me this."
She pressed a hidden spring on the back of the gold locket.
The front casing popped open, revealing a micro-SD storage card taped inside the tiny metal frame.
"He told me to give this to Sarah on her thirty-fifth birthday," Evelyn whispered. "Or whenever Arthur finally came back to hurt us."
Agent Vance carefully picked up the micro-SD card using tweezers and sealed it inside an anti-static evidence bag.

"This tiny card," Vance said gravely, "contains twenty years of international money laundering data. It's enough to dismantle the entire Crown Syndicate."
"And it's why Arthur was so desperate to get my mother back," I realized, the pieces finally coming together. "Arthur didn't just want the money. He needed this card to buy his own freedom from the Syndicate!"
