Chapter 26 - Stars over the Patio

After dinner, as the sun began to set, casting golden light across the backyard, I walked out onto the patio and leaned against the railing beside my mother.
The evening breeze was soft, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine from the garden. Inside, the muffled sound of jazz music and happy voices drifted through the open windows.
My mother looked over at me, wrapping her arm through mine, resting her head against my shoulder.
"You gave me my life back, Sarah," she whispered softly, her voice thick with emotion.
"You gave me my life first, Mom," I replied, squeezing her hand tightly.
We stood together in the quiet evening breeze, watching the stars begin to twinkle in the darkening sky. The tears, the bruises, and the cruel lies of the past were completely gone, replaced by an unbreakable bond of love, safety, and truth.
My mother was finally home—and no one would ever hurt her again.
We stood there for a long time, holding each other, enjoying the absolute serenity of a battle hard-won.
Dr. Reynolds stepped out onto the porch, holding two small glasses of sparkling cider. "Sorry to interrupt this lovely moment, ladies," he smiled warmly, handing us the glasses. "I just wanted to say... this was the best evening I've had in years. Evelyn, your speech brought a tear to my eye."
"Thank you, Richard," my mother smiled genuinely. "Thank you for being there when we needed you most."

As Dr. Reynolds walked back inside to join the others, my mother taking another sip of cider, a sudden, unfamiliar sound broke through the rustling tree leaves near the edge of the property line.
