Chapter 38 - The Public Smear

|
By eight o'clock the next morning, Arthur's legal team launched their secondary attack—not in a courtroom, but in the media.
I turned on the morning news in the kitchen, only to see Arthur's head attorney standing on the steps of the municipal courthouse, surrounded by news cameras and microphones.
"My client, Arthur Vance, is a respected civic leader and businessman," the attorney declared smoothly into the microphones. "He has been the victim of a coordinated campaign of character assassination orchestrated by his estranged stepdaughter, Sarah. She has manipulated her mother, who suffers from severe cognitive decline, to extort millions from Mr. Vance's private estate."
I clenched my fists so hard my knuckles turned white.
"He's trying to control the narrative," Clara said, stepping into the kitchen with her tablet. "He knows he can't win in court without clean evidence, so he's trying to ruin your professional reputation."
"Not happening," I said firmly. "Call Dr. Reynolds and Mr. Pendelton. We're holding our own press conference at two PM."
"Sarah, are you sure?" Evelyn asked gently from the doorway. "Do you want to expose our lives to the public?"
"Mom, Arthur has survived in the shadows for thirty years because nobody exposed him," I replied, walking over to clasp her hands. "We are going to shine a spotlight so bright on him that he will have nowhere left to hide."
At two o'clock, we stood in the conference room of Mr. Pendelton's downtown legal firm. Over twenty local and regional journalists packed the room.
I stood at the podium with Evelyn on my left and Dr. Reynolds on my right.
"My name is Sarah Jenkins," I announced clearly into the flashing cameras. "And I am here today to set the record straight about Arthur Vance."
For fifteen minutes, I presented verified medical records, financial audit logs, and police reports detailing Arthur's decades of domestic abuse and corporate theft.
Then, Dr. Reynolds stepped up to the microphone.

"As a licensed board-certified psychiatrist," Dr. Reynolds declared, "I certify that Evelyn Vance is fully coherent, mentally sound, and a survivor of severe domestic coercion. Arthur Vance's claims of dementia are entirely fabricated."
The room erupted into furious chatter and flashing cameras. The tide was turning.
