Chapter 18 - The Midnight Escape

|

At 2:00 AM, the peaceful quiet of my cottage was shattered by a deafening bang against my front door.

My mother screamed, dropping her mug onto the rug. I jumped up, grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the mantle, and marched toward the entryway.

Through the side window, I saw Arthur standing under the porch light. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot with rage. Two heavy-set men in dark suits stood behind him on the lawn.

"Open this door, Sarah!" Arthur roared, hammering his fist against the wood. "Evelyn, get out here right now! You are committing marital abandonment! I am your legal guardian under the power of attorney!"

"Get off my property, Arthur!" I shouted through the locked door. "The police have been notified!"

"The police won't do a thing!" Arthur sneered. "I have a court-ordered petition for temporary emergency custody! Your mother is mentally incompetent, and you kidnapped her from my home!"

One of the men behind him stepped onto the porch, holding a crowbar. They were going to break the door down.

Suddenly, glaring white headlights cut through the darkness of my driveway. A silver pickup truck pulled up onto the grass, followed closely by two marked St. Jude’s Hospital security cruisers.

Dr. Reynolds stepped out of his truck, wearing a dark coat over his scrubs, accompanied by two imposing hospital security officers. Behind them came Brenda, holding a thick stack of medical files.

"Step away from the porch, Vance!" Dr. Reynolds called out, his voice booming across the lawn.

Arthur spun around, startled by the arriving fleet. "Who the hell are you?"

"I am Dr. Richard Reynolds, Chief of Medicine at St. Jude's," he announced, stepping onto the walkway. "And as a mandatory reporter under state law, I have already filed an emergency protective health order for Evelyn. If you take one more step toward that door, my security team will detain you for active stalking and domestic assault."
