Chapter 9 - The Sterling Shadow

Arthur Sterling was a man who preferred to operate in the shadows, unlike the flamboyant Victoria Langford. He built his real estate empire by quietly acquiring distressed properties, evicting the vulnerable, and erecting luxury condominiums. He owned city councilmen, building inspectors, and judges.
Claire spent three sleepless nights pouring over the documents Maya had brought. The deed to the Oakridge Community Center was a masterpiece of legal forgery. The property had originally been placed in a trust for the neighborhood, but through a series of complex shell companies, Sterling had effectively erased the trust's existence.
Sophie walked into the kitchen on the fourth morning, rubbing her eyes. She looked at the towering stacks of paper on the table.
"Are we fighting another bad person, Mom?"
Claire paused, looking at her brave nine-year-old daughter.
"Yes, sweetie. A man who wants to take away a place where children go to learn and play."
"Then we have to stop him."
Sophie’s absolute certainty gave Claire a renewed surge of energy. She began mapping out the shell companies. Sterling had used a firm called Apex Holdings to execute the final deed transfer. The notary who signed the document was listed as Richard Vance.
Claire pulled up the city's obituary records on her laptop. Her blood ran cold.
"Richard Vance," Claire whispered to herself.

He had died in a car accident six months before the deed was supposedly notarized. Sterling hadn't just bent the rules; he had committed blatant, arrogant fraud. But proving that Sterling himself orchestrated it, rather than just a rogue employee, would require piercing a massive corporate veil.
"Get your coat, Sophie," Claire said, standing up. "We're going to make some new friends."
