Chapter 16 - The Gala

The Sterling Enterprises Shareholder Gala was held in the grand ballroom of a luxury hotel downtown. It was a suffocating display of wealth, filled with politicians, developers, and socialites who turned a blind eye to Sterling's ruthlessness.
Claire entered on Adrian's arm. She wore a stunning, emerald-green evening gown that commanded attention without being ostentatious. Hidden inside her small clutch purse was a specialized piece of technology Elise Mercer had procured: a high-resolution, covert biometric scanner disguised as a compact mirror.
"There he is," Adrian whispered, nodding toward the center of the room.
Arthur Sterling was a tall, imposing man with silver hair and a tailored tuxedo. He was holding court, laughing loudly with a group of city councilmen.
"I have exactly one chance to get his right thumbprint," Claire murmured. "I need a distraction."
"Leave that to me," Adrian replied.
Adrian seamlessly navigated the crowd, approaching a waiter carrying a tray of red wine. With a subtle, calculated stumble, Adrian bumped into the waiter, sending three glasses of wine crashing directly onto the shoes of a prominent judge.
Chaos erupted. Security guards rushed toward the mess, and the crowd momentarily parted.
Claire seized the moment. She walked swiftly toward Sterling, who was distracted by the commotion. She deliberately dropped her clutch purse right at his feet. It popped open, spilling a few harmless items onto the carpet.
"Oh, I am so sorry," Claire said, feigning embarrassment as she knelt down.

Sterling, ever the public gentleman when eyes were on him, instinctively knelt to help her. His right hand reached out to grab the compact mirror.
His thumb pressed directly onto the hidden scanner.
